Trailers really do come in all shapes and sizes, but that is a really good thing. With so many options available, with a little research and help from us, it’s easy to find the perfect trailer to suit your needs. Since there are so many different types of trailers, narrowing down what the right recreational vehicle (RV) is for you can be a challenge. Read along and find out the key differences between tent trailers and travel trailers; we’ll give you some valuable insight so you can make an informed decision when you buy your next RV.

Tent Trailer or Travel Trailer

As the name suggests, a tent trailer resembles a traditional camping tent, but it’s sturdier and sits on a small trailer that acts as a base. Travel trailers, on the other hand, tend to be more rigid and bigger. So, which one is right for you? Here are a few key differences:

Waterproof

Travel trailers are 100% waterproof and can stand up to the elements. This is because most travel trailers have hard, reinforced, and sometimes insulated walls and roof. A tent trailer has a heavy duty canvas exterior that is also waterproof but can do tend to move more and cause noise in heavy winds. For those who plan on doing a lot of camping, especially in less than ideal weather, a travel trailer is likely your best option.

Towing

Tent trailers tend to weigh a lot less than an average size travel trailer. Depending on the towing capability of your vehicle, a tent trailer could be a good option for you. Unlike larger travel trailers and fifth wheels, tent trailers can often be towed by cars and small SUVs.

Setup

Generally speaking, a traditional travel trailer is easier to setup than a tent. Other than hooking up electricity, water, and potentially sewage, a travel trailer is ready to go as soon as you get to your campsite. Travel trailers (depending on the size) also tend to have more storage and cargo space, so it’s easier to bring along everything you need without having to do any “creative packing”. In comparison, tent trailers do take more time and effort to setup when you arrive at your destination.

Storage

Tent trailers fold up and take up considerably less space than the majority of travel trailers. This makes storing them a lot easier than a traditional trailer. From a garage to your backyard, it’s pretty easy to find space for a tent trailer. Travel trailers can come in some truly massive dimensions and in many cases it’s best to pay to have them stored off-site.
